The A.I.R.E. Program is a Girl Scout outreach program that targets girls living in public housing units on the north and south side of the Fort Smith area. The overall goal of the A.I.R.E. program is to reduce the social risk factors for young girls by strengthening their survival, social, and educational skills through the four A.I.R.E. program goals; Achieving, Reaching, Including, and Expanding. The program outline is divided into four quarters. Each quarter is made up of a core educational curriculum, supporting activities with a community partner, and then applying their knowledge with a volunteer community service project.
Focus areas are literacy and financial literacy, self-esteem , confidence, cultural awareness, and tolerance. Life skills, such as etiquette, poise, and good citizenship, are introduced, as well as, refusal skills for anti-violence and anti-drug issues. Math, science, and technology are introduced through various mediums, and hands-on activities. Girls interact with local business partners who offer real-life insight into careers and career paths that are relevant to the education choices the girls make today. A Performing Arts summer camp is offered as a week-long immersion into drama, dance, comedy, music, and a variety of other fun activities. The A.I.R.E. program is created to meet the needs of positive youth development through the four A.I.R.E. program goals. In addition to the A.I.R.E. program goals, the Girl Scout Promise, and Law is made an integral part of these girls' lives through program curriculum, community service activities, and troop meetings. |
