Here is a great opportunity for your troop to get to know the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center and earn the GSCMMA's very first councils own Badge or Try-it. Troops and individuals can earn these recongitions by visiting the Nature Center and doing the required number of activities as per all other Badge and Try-It guidelines. Recognitions are available at the council shop.
Badge

Requirements
1. Perform a service project for the Nature Center. Project must be approved by the Center and be inline with the skill level of the girls.
2. Lake exploration – With the help of a Nature Center employee or volunteer investigate the diversity of fish in Wells Lake by seining the shoreline.
3. Print the Exhibit Hall Scavenger Hunt Questionnaire from www.rivervalleynaturecenter.com under teacher resources. Fill it out while touring the center and turn in to your leader.
4. Bird Observation – Identify at least six bird species by watching at the feeding area or by walking the trails. Find out each bird’s preferred habitat, food and nesting habits.
5. Interview two employees about their jobs- required education, experience, responsibilities, favorite/least favorite tasks, etc.
6. Learn about and participate in one of the outdoor sports offered at the center – archery, fishing, canoeing, etc.
7. Native plant discovery - Walk the native plant gardens at the Nature Center. Draw pictures of at five plants, label with the common and scientific names and look of three facts about each plant. Or learn about some of Arkansas’ native plants by scheduling a visit with the centers plant expert.
8. Participate in a guided hike or other trail activity.
9. Participate in an age appropriate informational program or event offered by the Nature Center.
Try-It

Requirements
1. Perform a service project for the Nature Center. Project must be approved by the Center and be in line with the skill level of the girls.
2. List four different live animals found in the Nature Center.
3. Look for four different birds at the bird feeding area. Are they eating from the ground, a hanging feeder or a post feeder?
4. Take a hike on the Wells Lake trail and look for signs of wildlife – nests, footprints, etc.
5. Lake Exploration – With the help of a Nature Center Volunteer or Employee look for macroinvertebrates along the shore of Wells Lake. Try to find and identify at least three different kinds of macroinvertebrates.
6. Participate in an age appropriate informational program or event offered by the Nature Center.
7. Explore the Mural painted on the wall of the main exhibit room of the nature center. Find the following: Fence Lizard, Copperhead Snake, White tail Deer, Turkey, Coyote, Deer Stand, Hawk, Quail, Dove, Hunter, Squirrel, Pine Tree, Fallen Log, Dead Leaves, Moss.
