Effective October 2008 - The new council’s name will be Girl Scouts – Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Click here for dates & times for town hall meetings to discuss the new council.

What Training am I Required To Take?

  • New Leader Orientation (NLO)- Given by a local Service Team member or Membership Specialist, this training introduces the new leader to Girl Scouting. (Approximately 1 hour)

  • Basic Troop Management (BTM) - Includes information about GSCMMA and G.S.U.S.A, troop government, forms and records, budgeting, etc. Given at various times and locations in the council. (3 Hours)

  • Program Age Level (PAL)- Includes activities and information about the specific program age level the leader is working with. Given at various times and locations in the council. (3 hours)

NOTE: the leader must take Basic Troop Management and Program Age Level before she will be allowed to sell cookies with her troop. It is also recommended that the Troop Cookie Manager, if other than the leader, should have this training.

  • Planning Safe and Successful Girl Scout Trips - Includes the essentials in planning Girl Scout trips that are safe and offer quality program experiences for the girls, dealing with discipline problems, budgeting, and progression of trips. This training should be taken before the Girl Scout troop plans a trip. (Approximately 2 hours)

  • Indoor Camping Certification (ICC)- Focuses on teaching leaders the steps for planning an overnight activity in an indoor facility. Must be taken before spending the night indoors. (Approximately 5-6 hours)

  • Outdoor Camping Certification (OCC) - Focuses on teaching leaders the skills needed in taking a troop tent camping. Must take ICC before attending this course. (A day session and an overnight camping weekend)

NOTE: As an alternative to the leader taking all the training, a program consultant trained in troop camping may help the leader and girls prepare for the troop camping trip and then accompany the leader and troop in the trip. This outdoor program consultant must take Outdoor Awareness, Indoor Camping Certification, and Outdoor Camping Certification. The leader trained in BTM and PAL must accompany the troop at all times when camping.

  • Community First Aid and Safety - All troops are required to have a certified first aid person present when involved in activities, which may present a high risk, or in camping activities. A certified first aid person is an adult who has a current Red Cross Standard or Community First Aid card, or has had equivalent training. (Doctor, LPN, RN, EMT) Questions concerning equivalent training should be addressed to the council Adult Development Director.

  • Additional Workshops - In addition to the required training's, specialized workshops are offered throughout the year on songs and games, crafts, contemporary issues, ceremonies, and others as requested or needed by the volunteers.
